What Is Leaf Peeping, Anyway?
If you’re new to the term, leaf peeping just means getting outside to watch the maples, oaks, and birches turn from green to gold, orange, and deep red. It’s a Catskills tradition that draws people from every corner of the Hudson Valley, and honestly, it never gets old.
1. Fall Foliage Off Exit 19
Heading out from Kingston, the easiest starting point is fall foliage off Exit 19 on the NYS Thruway. From there, take Route 28 West along the north side of the Ashokan Reservoir. Once you reach Boiceville, turn onto Route 28A to loop back along the reservoir’s south side. This scenic loop brings you right back to Route 28 just outside Kingston, giving you incredible mountain reflections on the water the whole way around.
2. Ashokan Rail Trail
For a walk instead of a drive, the Ashokan Rail Trail gives you 11.5 miles of flat, easy path along the reservoir’s north shore, with trailheads at West Hurley, Shokan, and Boiceville. Bring the dog, bring the kids, bring a thermos of cider. The views of the high peaks across the water are some of the best fall foliage near Kingston, NY, you’ll find without breaking a sweat.
3. Overlook Mountain in Woodstock
A short drive from Kingston, the hike up Overlook Mountain in Woodstock rewards you with panoramic views stretching across the full Catskill range. It’s a moderate climb, well-marked, and popular for good reason. Pack water and good boots, and give yourself the better part of a morning.
4. Catskill Mountain Railroad
Prefer to sit back and let someone else do the driving? The Catskill Mountain Railroad runs seasonal foliage train rides from Westbrook Lane Station right in Kingston, chugging up toward Hurley Flats with front-row seats to the color change. It’s an easy way to bring grandparents or little ones along for the ride.
5. Hunter Mountain and Kaaterskill Falls
If you’ve got a full day to spend, point the car toward Hunter Mountain for the Scenic SkyRide, an 11-minute lift ride to the 3,200-foot summit with views into Vermont and Massachusetts on a clear day. Kaaterskill Falls, a two-tiered, 260-foot waterfall nearby, is worth the stop too. Go early, since the parking area fills up fast once the color peaks.
