Things to Do in Kingston, NY This Summer: A Full Day in the Hudson Valley

Photo of a smiling young woman and her dog bathing in the river; having a great time and enjoying the sunny afternoon outdoors.

The city sits at the center of some of the best summer geography in New York with Hudson River access, walkable historic neighborhoods, easy drives to Woodstock and New Paltz, and a food and arts culture that doesn’t feel like it was built for tourists. If you’re building a summer activities itinerary in the Hudson Valley, Kingston is the starting point that keeps paying off.

And when you’re ready to round out the day, Domes Dispensary is a natural stop. We’re local, care-grown, and stocked with cannabis products that fit the way people actually spend their summers here.

Start the Morning at the Water and in the Neighborhoods

Kingston Point Beach along the Hudson River is the right opening move on a warm morning. The views are clean, the walk is easy, and the Rondout Creek and marina district nearby make the whole area feel like its own small world within the city. The Hudson River Maritime Museum sits right on the Rondout Waterfront and adds a layer of local history that’s worth a stop, even if you just walk through the maritime area.

Forsyth Nature Center in the Forsyth Park area is another well-loved morning destination with trails, gardens, and a quiet, green atmosphere that feels local. If you prefer elevation, Hasbrouck Park offers views over Kingston with open green space and trails that don’t require a car or a full hike.

For coffee and a slow morning start, the Kingston Farmers Market is a seasonal community ritual. Local vendors, produce, and artisan goods. It’s a good way to get your bearings in the city before the day builds.

Spend the Afternoon in the Stockade District and at the Rosendale Street Festival

The Stockade District is Uptown Kingston at its best: walkable, historic, and full of cafes, boutiques, galleries, and independent restaurants. Art walks, seasonal markets, and community gatherings regularly take over the area throughout the summer. Check the Kingston city calendar for what’s on during your visit.

If your summer timing lines up, the Rosendale Street Festival is one of the Hudson Valley’s most beloved community events. Live music, local vendors, food, artists, and community organizations fill the streets of a town that feels like it was built for exactly this kind of afternoon.

Take a Short Trip: Woodstock and New Paltz

Woodstock is about 15 minutes northwest of Kingston and earns every minute of the drive. Tinker Street has independent shops, art galleries, music venues, and cafes tucked into a town with real Catskills character. Scenic drives into the mountains from Woodstock are some of the best summer events in the Hudson Valley backdrop you’ll find.

New Paltz is 30 minutes south and pulls in a different direction: Mohonk Preserve for serious hiking, Minnewaska State Park Preserve for waterfalls and cliffside views, and a downtown with good food and a college-town summer energy. Opus 40 Sculpture Park and Museum is also worth adding if you’ve never been. Trails through a massive bluestone landscape that’s unlike anything else in the region.
